A template is an empty document that provides the framework for the development of an IDM component document.

Each template is provided both as a Microsoft Word template and as an XML schema definition. Both can be used in conjunction with word processing applications such as Microsoft Word (2003 or above) or Open Office Writer. XML templates can also be used in conjunction with XML editors able to apply XML schema definitions such as XML Notepad, XML Spy, XML Mind and others.

The XML schema definition used for each template is derived as a subset of an extended ifcXML schema.

Note that presently, all IDM document templates are specified within a single 'view' schema of an extended IFC model.
